Father and daughter will both be awarded degrees by Washington University at the annual commencement exercises next Tuesday. They are Dr. William Frederick Arndt, professor of Greek at Concordia Seminary, and already distinguished in the field of languages, who will receive the degree of doctor of philosophy in Greek and Latin, and Miss Ilse Arndt, who has specialized in French and Greek, who will receive her bachelor of arts degree.
Another daughter, Miss Erna Arndt, already has her master's degree from Washington University, and is working toward a Ph. D. in German. She has been awarded a fellowship at the university for the coming school year, while her sister will continue her studies through a scholarship just conferred. Both girls are members of Phi Beta Kappa, scholastic fraternity.
Dr. Arndt, who took his master's degree at the University of Chicago, wrote his thesis on “The Participle in Polybius and in St. Paul.” He found an interesting contrast, reflected through grammatical habits, between Polybius, brilliant Greek historian of the second century, B.C, and the active, zealous Paul, the latter habitually lapsing into jergy phraseology, while the calmer Greek mirrored his mood in deliberate participles. Dr. Arndt's particular field at Concordia Seminary is the New Testament.
