FRANZ MUELLER Page 3
Business of Franz Mueller in Germany
Probably in Strelitz? When?
I requested interpretation of this photo on several German genealogy email discussion lists. Below is a compilation of the wonderful replies I received.
This is not a tavern. It looks like Franz Mueller is the distributor for a brewery and also handles bottled goods, lemonade and siphons.
The sign above the door in small letters says "Bierhandlung Franz Müller".
The large sign reads : Vertreter F. Müller
Verkauf : Flaschen, Gebinde, Siphons, Limonaden
Sales-representative F. Müller
Selling : Bottles, Gebinde, Siphons, LemonadesA "Gebind" is set of containers, [perhaps akin to our present-day "six-pack"], or a large container, perhaps a keg.
A "Siphon" is a great bulgy glass-bottle with a metal handle (2 or 3 litre) and was used to buy beer or Fassbrause (a apple limonade with gas). I know it was usual in Berlin and surrounding area, but I don't know whether Siphons were usual in other parts of Prussia.
Left of the door is the name of a brewery (Brauerei). Most breweries are limited in a local region. When you can read the name, you know the region !
The back of the wagon looks like: "Wahr Uhler," and below might be "Fritz."
Thanks to all who offered translations and comments!
