Leverett Usher, son of Dr. Charles L. and Mrs. Usher, was born in or near Cleveland, Ohio, June 15, 1839, and came with his parents to the Territory of Iowa in 1842, where they settled in Farmers Creek township, Jackson county, where Leverett spent nearly all his life. On the 5th of October, 1861, at the age of 22, he enlisted in Co. L. 2nd Iowa Cavalry, Iowa's splendid fighting regiment. He received serious injuries in the famous charge of that regiment at Farmington, Ky., and was discharged for disability in September 1862. On February 22, 1872, he was united in marriage with Miss Hulda J. Tubbs, who has been a helpful life partner through all the years, nursing and caring for him in his last illness.
His father, Charles L. Usher, was a practicing physician in Jackson county for many years, and his Aunt * Denison taught the first school taught in what is now Maquoketa, in 1842 in the sod covered log school house. His uncle, Chas. P. Usher, was member of Lincoln's cabinet. **
Leverett Usher was patriotic to a marked degree, loyal to his country and the flag, and a good soldier, and all through his life a good citizen, good neighbor and true friend. He was stricken with paralysis last Monday, Feb. 4, about 1 o'clock p.m. and passed away between 4 and 5 p.m., Feb. 5, 1924. He is believed to have been the last survivor of his company. Captain W. S. Belden when visiting here in the fall of 1922, told the writer that he believed that Leverett Usher and himself were the last survivors of his company, and he died on his way home.
Those left to mourn the passing of the old veteran are his devoted wife, one son, Ralph, and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Harrison's funeral home Friday, Feb. 8, at 2 o'clock, Rev. Kidder officiating, and remains will be placed in the mausoleum for the present.
