THEY MEET AGAIN – A separation period of 45 years ended here Wednesday for William F. Schukar (left) of 2003 East Court street, and his brother Fred, of Alberta, Canada. The men last saw each other in 1914. They are the last in a family of 10 children. (Press-Citizen Photo.)

Two Schukar Brothers Meet for the First Time Since 1914

William F. Schukar of 2003 East Court street, is 85 years old. His brother, Fred, of Bulwark, Alberta, Canada, is 86 years old. They've been to a lot of places and seen a lot of things in all those years, but they had not seen each other in nearly half a century. Today William and Fred Schukar, the last of a family of 10 children, are re-united after 45 years. The last time the brothers saw each other was in 1914 when the William Schukar family lived at Waverly. Fred and another brother had gone to Canada seven years before.

Difficult travel arrangements, the event of two world wars and a number of other factors combined to keep the brothers apart until Wednesday when Fred stepped off an airliner at Waterloo and was met by relatives who brought him to Iowa City.

Traveling with Fred is Richard Newman (sic), a great- nephew of the elderly traveler. Mr. Schukar plans to spend about two weeks visiting old acquaintances in Iowa. He is a bachelor.

William, whose wife died recently, makes his home with a son, E. H. Schukar. He has lived here since 1921. His other children are Alfred of Cleveland, Ohio, Arnold of Durant, Mrs. Lillian Lindemann, Mrs. Clara Nerad, and Wendell, all of Iowa City, and Mrs. Elsie Forsen of Omaha.

Visiting here while Fred Schukar is in the city are Mrs. Will Droste and Mrs. Johanna Kahle, both of Waverly, and both nieces, and August Schukar of Plainfield, a nephew.
