HENRY BARTELS FAMILY
Johnson County, Nebraska

In an 11th January 2003 email from a fellow researcher, I received a message containing the following:

(A BUETHE family book 1869-1979,) was edited by Evelyn BUETHE; book committee was Alma CARMINE, Delta EISMANN, Lorene GOTTULA. Don't believe it was published; just typed pages, unnumbered, and put together for those interested family members. It has the following information:

Charlotte BUETHE was born on March 24, 1847, the daughter of Carl Ludwig BUETHE and wife, Wilhelmine BUELTEMEIER. She married H. Heinrich BARTELS, who was born June 26, 1841, while the family lived in Illinois where their first son, Carl, was born.

They moved to their home two and one half miles southwest of Elk Creek on what is known as the Adolph BUETHE farm in 1869. Here the other five of their six children were born.

Charlotte died at the age of 32 years on May 23, 1879 during childbirth. The baby died, also. Mr. and Mrs. Fred LAABS, a young couple from Germany came to live with the family and to help care for the children.

Six years later on April 26, 1885 her husband H. Heinrich BARTELS died from pneumonia. The children then went to live with relatives. Carl was old enough to work as a hired man; Caroline and Henry lived with Aunt Caroline RINNE; Emma lived with Aunt Hanna BARTELS; Louise lived with Uncle Carl BUETHE; and August lived with Uncle August BUETHE.
